Cabaret

When Esmee and I started brainstorming on the comedians we know, it became clear that we enjoy the same type of humour. The first comedian that popped up in our minds was Brigitte Kaandorp, an amazing woman with astonishing shows. We have watched so many of her performances: on the internet, television and even one in real life, at a theatre tour on Vlieland (this was a great experience and we’ll definitely visit such a show again in the future!) We kept talking about her songs and jokes, and totally forgot about the assignment: make a list of as many comedians as possible. However, we got back to the task and started brainstorming again. This list was not extensive as we first thought it would be, since we know loads of shows and comedians, but we always forgot their names (unless they made a very big impression, obviously).

We also love watching British comedians. The best thing about Britons is their amazing accent, which we love and (try to) imitate ;) Principally when foreigners talk about the Netherlands, it is entertaining to listen to.

‘Friday-evening shows’ are usually not as entertaining to us. The main thing we hate about them is that nowadays, loads of comedians appear on these shows as an unsympathetic beings. We prefer watching complete shows, instead of shows like “Dit was het nieuws”. However, we do enjoy watching improvisation-shows.

Some of our family members are really funny. Annemiek’s little sister is funny without even noticing, and our parents and siblings can make nice jokes too. If we are funny ourselves, we can’t really judge. We do make jokes sometimes, but occasionally we are the only ones laughing... ;) This is why humour can be personally or part of a culture.

We think humour is important to take things into perspective a bit more. If you haven’t got any humour, your whole life will be so strict and difficult.

Our own top 10:

  1. ZVBO school, Jorgen Raymann – we enjoyed watching this movie most because the comedian told hilarious stories out of his own experience.
  2. Goochelen met taal, Herman Vinkers – We loved this movie, partly because he exposes the flaws in the Dutch language in a funny way.
  3. Rowan Atkinson, The devil Toby welcomes you to hell – We really liked this movie, mainly because it is about a subject, one would normally not talk about, exaggerating on the flaws and corrupt groups of people in our community and making us aware of these things in a funny way.
  4. Antwoordapparaten, RKK – We liked this movie because it is simple and easy to understand making it funny.
  5. In de taxi, Kasper Kooten – We quite enjoyed this clip because the man exaggerates on a social issue putting his own experience into the story.
  6. Dieren en tijd, Hans Teeuwen – We thought watching this movie was doable; it was a bit absurd, which sometimes made it funny but sometimes it was just too weird to be likable.
  7. Snackbar, Waardenberg en de Jong – We didn’t really like this movie, it was absurd and although there was probably a deeper message to the act, we didn’t understand half of it.
  8. Engelsman, Poelmo – We didn’t like this movie, the only thing that happened was a ‘situation’ that was getting out of hand. To show this they started shouting, in our opinion this is not funny at all.
  9. Rooyackers kamps en kamps, Lekker in mn eentje – Even though everything he says is recognizable we did not see the humour in this movie, all the ‘disruptions’ were not very funny. So although the situation he described is decipherable we were not a big fan of the act.
  10. Spastische Psychiater, Martine Sandifort & Alex Klaasen – We thought this movie was very absurd and kind of gross with no use and nothing funny in it at all.

The things we think are important in cabaret are mainly that the act is original, but not too absurd, preferably based on a comedian’s own experience, or with the goal of teaching the community something with the act. There shouldn’t be too much malicious pleasure but a bit can be funny.

Our presentation was about Brigitte Kaandorp’s ‘ANWB-koppel’. We first introduced Briggite Kaandorp, providing some background information on this comedian and on her show. Then we showed our chosen clip, subsequently starting a discussion on the subject matter.

We can conclude, from the outcome of our presentation, that everyone liked Brigitte Kaandorp’s show ‘het ANWB koppel’ and some students already knew it. We already expected this, since she is a very popular comedian and a lot of people know and enjoy her shows. The discussion we had afterwards was quite funny with people realizing they actually are acquainted with the typical kind of people Kaandorp described in her show, causing some funny anecdotes.
