Rugby World Cup Quarter Final

On Sunday October 18, 2015, I went to the Rugby World Cup Quarter Final. My British host family, Vladimir, Lucy and  Niko, are die-hard rugby fans, and so they decided that a trip  to the UK should include a visit to the Twickenham Stadium. Happy to go anywhere that would teach me something about English life and culture, I agreed on joining.

I had never been to a rugby match. I had seen some fragments online, however, being present at such an event was astonishing! It was a very close-call between the Australian team and the Scottish team, but eventually, Australia won with 35 points over 34. I thought it was amazing to see these athletes play such an important match. I did not really know what to expect, but I absolutely loved it. Supporters of the Scots and the Australians were all mixed in the audience, opposed to football matches, when every team has its own seats. The people in the audience were really good to each other; some people got a bit drunk, but there were no fights and the Scottish people took their loss.

I am not a big fan of rugby, but watching this match I really enjoyed. I think this is a cultural activity, for in the Netherlands, rugby is not as big a deal as it is in countries like Australia and the UK. Thus, I really got the opportunity to be part of a group of people and a culture, and when shouting and clapping, we felt like ‘one people’, instead of a combination of different cultures. We all had one goal; having a lovely day out, and of course having our own team win the match. As I accompanied my British host family, I supported the Scottish team. Unfortunately, they did not win, but no one was mourning. Everyone was proud of the Scots, as they played an amazing game.

For presenting my CA, I made a poster, announcing the rugby match.
